Une mesure remarquable est celle de la variation avec l’altitude, en dessous de 140 km d’altitude, du rapport de mélange du méthane par rapport à l’azote. Constant dans la stratosphère de Titan, ce rapport de mélange commence à croître dans la troposphère en dessous de 32 km d’altitude jusqu’à 8 km, ou il devient constant jusqu’à la surface. Ce comportement suggère que le méthane est saturé à 8 km, altitude ou il pourrait se condenser et former de la brume. Un phénomène remarquable a été observé à la surface. Deux minutes après l’impact, le rapport de mélange du méthane s’est accru brusquement de 40% (Figure 4). Ceci est corrélé avec l’augmentation de la température de l’entrée du GCMS (inlet) dont le rayonnement chauffe la surface (initialement à -179°C) qui de ce fait dégaze. La température de l’inlet monte jusqu’à 85°C. D’autres espèces ont dégazé (Figure 4) : l’éthane, le dioxyde de carbone, et très probablement d’autres hydrocarbures incluant le benzène. Ce pourrait être l’indice de la présence à la surface de composés organiques beaucoup plus complexes, responsables de la couleur du matériau sombre observé par DISR.

Figure 5 : On a obtenu les profils de température, de pression et de densité àpartir de l’altitude de 1500 kilomètres jusqu’àla surface du satellite. Dans la haute atmosphère, la densité et la température sont plus élevées que prévu. Plusieurs couches d’inversion de la température témoignent une stratification forte et une remarquable variabilité temporelle de l’atmosphère. Dans la basse stratosphère et dans la troposphère les mesures confirment le comportement décrit par les modèles existants basés sur les mesures faites il y a plus de vingt ans par Voyager 1. Figure 6 : Pendant la descente (àpartir d’une altitude de 150 kilomètres) ont été détectées des charges électriques positives et négatives : ces mesures ont été employées pour dériver le profil de conductivité électrique et pour sonder pour la première fois la couche ionosphérique inférieure induite par les rayons cosmiques. Un pic de conductivité a été trouvé àenviron 60 kilomètres, même si les valeurs sont très inférieures àcelles de la conductivité de l’atmosphère Terrestre. Figure 7 : Les accéléromètres de bord ont enregistré l’impact de la sonde Huygens avec la surface de Titan, donnant quelques indications sur la nature du sol : la sonde a atterri sur une surface solide, qui a des propriétés semblables àcelle du sable humide. Les senseurs de température et de pression ont continué àmesurer les conditions météorologiques pendant presque une demi-heure après l’impact, indiquant une température constante de -180°C et une pression stable de 1,47 atmosphères. Huygens nous a révélé un monde façonné par des processus géophysiques similaires à ceux qui se déroulent sur Terre, mais avec des acteurs chimiques complètement différents. Ces observations nous apportent des clés pour comprendre l’origine et l’évolution de Titan mais plusieurs questions importantes restent posées. La sonde Cassini, actuellement en orbite autour de Saturne, poursuit l’exploration de Titan et va compléter à plus grande échelle les données recueillies par la sonde Huygens.

A remarkable measurement is that of the variation with altitude, below 140 km height, of the abundance ratio between methane and nitrogen. Constant in the stratosphere of Titan, this ratio starts to grow in the troposphere below 32 km altitude up to 8 km, where it becomes constant until the surface. This behavior suggests that methane is saturated at 8 km, altitude where it could condense and form fog. A remarkable phenomenon was observed on the surface. Two minutes after the impact, the abundance ratio of methane increased abruptly by 40% (Figure 4). This is correlated with the increase in the inlet temperature of the GCMS (marked "inlet") whose radiation heats the surface (initially at -179°C) which thus degasses. The temperature of the inlet climbs up until 85°C. Other species degassed (Figure 4) : ethane, carbon dioxide, and most probably other hydrocarbons including benzene. It could be the index of the presence on the surface of much more complex organic compounds, responsible for the color of the dark material observed by DISR.

Figure 5 : The profiles of temperature, pressure and density from the altitude of 1500 km down to the surface of the satellite have been obtained. In the high atmosphere, density and temperature are higher than expected. Several layers of temperature inversion testify both a strong stratification and a remarkable temporal variability of the atmosphere. In the low stratosphere and the troposphere the measures confirm the behaviour described by the existing models based on the measures done more than twenty years ago by Voyager 1. Figure 6 : During the descent (starting from an altitude of 150 km) positive and negative electrical charges have been detected : these measurements have been used to derive the electrical conductivity profile and to probe for the first time the lower ionospheric layer induced by cosmic rays. Figure 7 : The on board accelerometers recorded the Huygens probe impact with the Titan surface, giving some indication on the soil nature : the probe touched down on a solid surface, which has properties similar to wet sand. The temperature and pressure sensors continued to monitor the meteorological conditions for almost half an hour after impact, indicating a constant temperature of -180°C and a stable pressure of 1.47 atm. The data collected "in situ" by HASI are essential to the calibration of the measures carried out from the other instruments of the Huygens probe and constitute the "ground truth" for the observations carried out from the Cassini instruments, thus contributing in meaningful way to the Titan global knowledge.
