Presentation 1 : Oral
Neutron stars, gravitational waves and inertial instabilities (PCHE)
L. Villain and S. Bonazzola
A numerical time-evolution of inertial modes in neutron stars (NS), using spectral methods and the anelastic approximation, was done. Here, a short introduction on gravitational waves (GW) and their emission explains why inertial modes make NS such promising sources of GW
and why GW are of first interest in astrophysics. Then, some peculiar features of relativistic inertial modes are illustrated. Due to the "frame dragging" - a relativistic effect that can be imitated by differential rotation in Newtonian theory -, purely toroidal modes no longer exist. Moreover, the modes driven to instability by the coupling to GW are mainly "concentrated" near the equator of the NS.
