MEDOC : Multi Experiment Data and Operation Centre
K. Bocchialini and I. Scholl
The scientific objectives and the technical activity of MEDOC (Multi-
Experiment Data and Operations Centre) are described as an element of
the ESA/NASA SOHO Mission ground-segment. It is a French project
initiated by French SOHO PIs and located at the Institut
d'Astrophysique Spatiale at Orsay.
MEDOC was designed as an ancillary centre to the EOF (Experiment
Operation Facilities, NASA). It provides the European solar scientific
community with the possibility to effectively participate in the
operational phase of SOHO during the MEDOC campaigns. It was also
created in order to host permanent and visitor scientists during normal
mode, campaign mode and solar data coordinated analysis workshops or
science meetings.
In terms of operations, MEDOC (1) makes available the reception of the
telemetry from the SOHO EOF using a dedicated link and its distribution
to local workstations, (2) archives all the telemetry and processed data
needed for (3) observation planning and coordination with European
ground-based observatories, especially during MEDOC campaigns, and (4)
secures commanding capabilities for PI Teams during local campaigns.
In terms of analysis facilities, MEDOC (5) archives all mission data as
a copy of the SOHO US Archive, under the label of 'European SOHO Archive',
(6) maintains the Archive interface developed by the local team, (7)
maintains the Solar Software library adapted to our local configuration
to analyse these data, (8) organizes coordinated data analysis workshops,
science meetings, and (9) trains younger scientists in the operations
and analysis of the various SOHO instruments.
