Gas in and around the Merger Galaxy NGC 1316 (Fornax A)

The southern elliptical galaxy NGC 1316 is also a strong double-lobe radio source known as Fornax A. It has a well-defined dust lane and outer
shells and loops that are signs of gravitational perturbations with
one or several companion galaxies that NGC 1316 may have accreted.
We have recently detected molecular gas corresponding to a total mass of 500 million solar masses in the area of the dust lane, and atomic gas associated with HII regions located more than 30 kpc away from the nucleus (Horellou et al. 2001).

Stars and Gas in the Gigantic Barred Galaxy NGC 6872
The luminous barred galaxy NGC 6872 is one of the largest spiral
galaxies known. Star formation is traced all along the arms,
which extend over more than 100 kpc. This is a challenge for models
of interacting galaxies that predict an infall of gas and a burst of star formation in the center.
We present new observations of the large-scale distribution and kinematics of the atomic gas obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array and VLT observations of the stellar populations, together with a comparison with numerical simulations of the evolution of gas and stars in this interacting system.
