Adaptive Optics applications to Ophtalmology (ASHRA)

Adaptive optics imaging of the retina in vivo on human subjects can lead to a significant gain in resolution. We realized and used a moderate performance system (13 actuator deformable mirror), which produced photoreceptors images containing spatial information almost up to the diffraction limit of a dilated retina (7 mm). Signal-to-noise ratio is limited by safety constraints, but is sufficient to reach this information on a single, short-exposure (7 ms) image. Examining subjects having a normal vision, we found only a small number who have low enough aberrations when dilated to stay within the dynamic range (+/- 2 mm) of the deformable mirror. These first results are presented in this paper.
