SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS: INSTRUCTIONS TO CONTRIBUTORS

There are two deadlines with different purposes. Both must be met if you wish to give a talk or present a poster-paper:

  • 15 Feb.  Submit Preliminary Abstract (poster contributions only) to SOC

  • This will enable the SOC to decide whether to accept your proposed contribution.
This abstract should include the names of all the authors.

  • 15 May.  Submit Final Abstract (oral and poster contributions) to SOC.

  • The Final Abstract will appear in the Abstract Book and on the World Wide Web. It must be prepared using the LaTeX template described below and should carry the name of only one author.  This author may be any of the team (not necessarily the first named) with et al. if appropriate.  By 31 May, this author must be registered to attend the General Assembly.

    The Abstract Book

A copy of the Abstract Book will be issued to all scientific participants registered for the General Assembly.  This will contain abstracts for all talks and poster-papers accepted for the Symposia, Joint Discussions and the Special Session within the General Assembly. To keep the book down to a reasonable weight there will be six abstracts per A4 page. This is only practical if abstracts are prepared in a standard format with a strict space limit. A LaTeX format has been adopted and a template for this is available at  http://www.jb.man.ac.uk/~abstract and below. Try to restrict the main text to about 150 words in order to leave a little space where the user can make notes. Final Abstracts should be submitted by email to the SOC by May 15, 2000.

It is intended that transmission of abstracts should be done electronically at all stages until the production of the final copy at Jodrell Bank Observatory (JBO).

    Co-authors
If it is desired to include names of co-authors, this may be done by a note within the main body of the abstract text, e.g. (Co-authors:  N. Copernicus/Frauenburg, Pol.,  G. Galileo/Pisa, It. & W. Herschell/Bath, UK.)

    The World-Wide Web
No separate version of the abstract is required for the Web.  The LaTeX version prepared for the Abstract Book will be converted to an appropriate form and made available on the Web, at http://www.jb.man.ac.uk/~abstract (links provided from both IAU and GA web sites).

    No LaTeX Facilities?
If you do not have access to LaTeX you should seek help from the SOC.  After you are informed that your original abstract has been accepted, please send a version of your Final Abstract to the SOC by whatever method is available to you as early as possible. As far as possible, follow the layout indicated in the Instructions below for use of the LaTeX template.

Note that when the available space is full, the text will automatically be truncated. You should be safe if you restrict the main text to approximately 200 words.
